The Government of Sri Lanka has officially declared Sunday, April 26, 2025, a National Day of Mourning in honor of the late Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this week. The announcement was made today by the Ministry of Public Administration.

The declaration reflects Sri Lanka’s respect and reverence for the life and legacy of Pope Francis, who was admired globally for his commitment to peace, humility, and interfaith harmony.

All national flags will be flown at half-mast on government buildings, and the public has been requested to observe two minutes of silence at noon on Sunday as a mark of respect. State functions and entertainment programs scheduled for the day will either be postponed or carried out in a subdued manner.

The Sri Lankan Catholic community, which forms a significant part of the island's religious mosaic, has expressed deep sorrow over the Pontiff’s passing. Special masses and prayer gatherings are expected to be held in churches across the country in memory of Pope Francis.

The funeral of Pope Francis is scheduled to take place at the Vatican on the same day, with world leaders, dignitaries, and religious figures expected to attend.
