Chinese delegation meets with Speaker of Parliament

The Delegation Headed by Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress Meets the Hon. Speaker of Parliament.

A delegation headed by Hon. Zhang Quan, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress (SCSMPC) of the People’s Republic of China, met with the Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, yesterday (21) at Parliament. The Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohandeera, was also present at the meeting.

Hon. Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne emphasized that the Parliament of Sri Lanka, as the legislative body, is committed to uphold the aspirations of the people, particularly in promoting anti-corruption, good governance and democracy. He noted that, as a significant step in this direction, the Parliament of Sri Lanka recently passed the Proceeds of Crime Bill, aimed at strengthening the country’s anti-corruption framework. The Speaker also commended the long standing friendship between Sri Lanka and China and expressed appreciation for China's continued support over the years.

Hon. Zhang Quan shared that this is his first visit to Sri Lanka and expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by the people of Sri Lanka. He mentioned his visit to the Colombo Port City, highlighting it as a significant development project with long-term strategic value for both nations. He further stated that the objective of the visit is to enhance cooperation between the two countries, especially with Shanghai in areas such as science, education and healthcare.

The meeting also explored potential areas of collaboration in agriculture, technology and tourism, with both sides expressing keen interest in furthering bilateral engagement.
