President assures efforts to ease US tariff impact

He revealed that a delegation led by Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma has left for the United States to engage in discussions aimed at mitigating the economic impact of the new trade measures.
Speaking to a large crowd gathered to mark the National People's Power’s victory in the recent local government elections, President Dissanayake stressed that his administration is committed to protecting the country’s economy.
“When U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a tax, some people cheered. After it was postponed for three months, their ears fell off. Now they are praying for failure,” the President said, criticizing political opponents and skeptics.
He further emphasized his vision of building a resilient economy, stating, “We are working towards creating an economy that will not waver, no matter what kind of turmoil the world faces.”
The President’s comments come at a time of increasing concern among exporters and business leaders about the long-term effects of foreign trade policies on Sri Lanka’s economic stability.
