President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, speaking at an election rally in Polonnaruwa today, described the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks as “the greatest tragedy ever carried out to seize political power.”

“It was on Easter Sunday 2019 that the greatest tragedy used to seize power took place,” the President stated, pointing to a politically motivated cover-up that followed the deadly bombings.

He accused previous administrations both the one that came into power in 2019 and the one that succeeded it of deliberately avoiding justice. “The motive behind the investigations over the past five and a half years was not justice, but to conceal the true masterminds behind the attacks,” Dissanayake said.

The President emphasized that the current government, led by the National People's Power (NPP), is committed to accountability. “Within six months of assuming office, we have taken step-by-step action to ensure justice for the victims,” he said, highlighting recent developments in the probe.

In a significant move earlier today, the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Sunday attacks was formally handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation — a step the NPP government says is crucial to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.

The 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, which targeted churches and hotels across Sri Lanka, claimed over 250 lives and injured hundreds more, leaving a lasting scar on the nation and raising serious concerns over national security, intelligence failures, and political manipulation.
