China Reaffirms Support for Sri Lanka Amid Global Trade Tensions

In a recent statement, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, emphasized the importance of multilateralism and economic cooperation, positioning the China-Sri Lanka relationship as a model for South-South collaboration.
“China-Sri Lanka relations are a model of South-South cooperation,” Ambassador Qi stated. “Both nations are well-positioned to build a shared future based on mutual benefit, respect, and stability.”
Highlighting China’s readiness to work closely with Sri Lanka to resist economic coercion, Ambassador Qi called for stronger efforts to maintain a fair and open global trading system. He pointedly addressed concerns over the growing trend of protectionism and unilateral tariff measures, warning of their potential to disrupt global economic stabilit
In a notable shift toward more direct rhetoric, Ambassador Qi delivered strong criticism of recent U.S. tariff policies. He described Washington’s move to impose “reciprocal tariffs” on all trading partners—including China and Sri Lanka—as “reckless” and “damaging to international trade norms.”
“These unilateral tariff actions defy market principles and threaten the economic stability of developing nations,” Qi said, adding that such measures could undermine years of progress in building inclusive global trade mechanisms.
The ambassador’s comments come amid increasing global concern over trade fragmentation and rising geopolitical tensions. Both China and Sri Lanka appear to be aligning more closely in advocating for multilateral solutions and resisting economic policies perceived as coercive or discriminatory.
As Sri Lanka continues to navigate its post-crisis recovery, China’s support is seen as vital in boosting infrastructure development, investment, and economic resilience.
