The warning covers the Northern, North Central, Wayamba, Western, Southern, and Eastern provinces, as well as the districts of Ratnapura and Monaragala. According to the Department, the prevailing dry and sunny weather conditions are responsible for the spike in temperatures.
Authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours, and limiting outdoor activities, especially for children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
“This is a serious heatwave event,” a spokesperson for the Meteorology Department stated. “We advise everyone to remain indoors as much as possible during the hottest parts of the day and to take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses.”
The Department has assured that it will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates as needed.
