Sri Lanka has initiated discussions with the United States to mitigate the effects of a 44% tariff imposed on its exports under new trade measures introduced by former President Donald Trump. Deputy Minister Harshana Sooriyapperuma confirmed that these talks began even prior to the official announcement of the tariff imposition.

The US government has clarified that the tariffs are based on a standardized formula and are not reflective of Sri Lanka’s import duties. In response, further meetings are scheduled to continue negotiations aimed at easing the impact of the tariffs on local businesses and exploring potential solutions.

The Sri Lankan government remains committed to ensuring that these developments do not disrupt its trade relations with the US, with a focus on maintaining economic stability for exporters. Local businesses are being kept updated on the progress of these talks.
