Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the official welcoming ceremony at Independence Square in Colombo this morning (April 5), marking the beginning of his significant two-day visit to Sri Lanka.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will engage in high-level talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat, followed by a meeting between bilateral representatives to discuss key areas of cooperation.

Several important agreements are on the agenda, including Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of energy, digitalization, security, and health. A major focus of the visit will also be on agreements related to debt restructuring with India, aimed at strengthening the economic ties between the two nations.

The day’s schedule will also see the virtual inauguration of several significant projects undertaken through Indian cooperation. These include the Sampur Solar Power Plant, the Dambulla Agricultural Storage Complex (Cold Storage Project), and the initiative to install solar panels on the roofs of 5,000 religious places across Sri Lanka, which was made possible by a generous donation from the Indian government.

In addition, Prime Minister Modi will pay homage to the Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred site of great significance to the Buddhist community. He is also expected to officially open the Mahawa-Anuradhapura railway signaling system and the modernized Mahawa-Omantha railway line, both of which were funded by India.

The Indian Prime Minister’s visit is seen as an important step in further deepening the bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka, with a focus on strengthening regional cooperation in various sectors.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to depart Sri Lanka on the afternoon of April 6, marking the conclusion of his official visit.
