
Advisory issued for severe lightning in several districts

The advisory alerts that thundershowers, accompanied by severe lightning, are expected to occur at numerous locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and Uva provinces.
The department has also cautioned that there may be temporary localized strong winds during the thunderstorms. In light of the severe weather conditions, the general public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize the risks posed by lightning activity.
As part of the advisory, the public is strongly advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid standing under trees, as well as staying in open areas like paddy fields, tea plantations, and near open water bodies during thunderstorms. Additionally, people should refrain from using wired telephones, connected electrical appliances, and avoid traveling in open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors, and boats.
The department also warned of the potential danger posed by fallen trees and power lines during the storms. For emergency assistance, the public is encouraged to contact local disaster management authorities.
The meteorological department will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
