Rare and fascinating astronomical event will occur on April 7th at precisely 12:12 PM, when the shadows of people living in Colombo and its surrounding suburbs will momentarily disappear. This occurrence, as explained by renowned astronomer Anura C. Perera, happens when the sun reaches its zenith, directly overhead, casting no shadow on the ground.

Mr.Perera elaborated that this phenomenon occurs twice a year in Sri Lanka when the sun's rays are directly aligned with the country.

For the next 10 days, various locations across Sri Lanka will experience this solar zenith as the sun moves across the sky. Starting on April 4th, the sun will begin its peak alignment from Cape Devundara and gradually move across different regions, with the final peak occurring over Point Pedro on April 15th.

In addition to observing this unique event, a special camp will be organized at the Colombo Municipal Council premises on April 7th, beginning at 11:30 AM. This camp will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the event and experience it firsthand.

For those unable to attend the camp in person, Perera suggests a simple way to observe the event from home: place a wooden stick, iron rod, or bottle in an open area with a clear view of the sky. At exactly 12:12 PM, participants will witness the fascinating moment when the sun is directly overhead, and their shadows vanish.

This rare celestial alignment is a reminder of the wonders of our planet's relationship with the sun and offers an excellent opportunity for both astronomy enthusiasts and the general public to connect with the natural world.
