The case against suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who is currently in remand custody, is set to be heard again today, April 3, 2025.

Reports indicate that Tennakoon will be transferred from Dumbara Prison to the Matara Courts under special security arrangements for the proceedings.

Tennakoon, along with seven other individuals, was arrested following a court order on February 27 in connection with a shooting incident that occurred in front of a Weligama hotel in Matara on December 31, 2023. The charges include conspiring to commit murder.

After evading arrest for 20 days, Tennakoon surrendered to the court on March 19, accompanied by a large group of lawyers. His arrest and the subsequent legal proceedings have drawn significant public attention, given his position as the country’s top police officer.

The developments today will continue to unfold in the Matara Courts, with heightened security measures in place as the case progresses.
