Thundershowers Expected Across Island in Coming Days

Atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for afternoon thundershowers over the next few days, impacting much of the island. Showers or thundershowers are expected to occur at several locations during the afternoon or night, with some areas experiencing heavy rainfall.

 The Meteorological Department has issued a warning that rainfall of up to 100 mm is likely in certain areas, particularly in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa districts.

In addition, misty conditions are expected during the morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Central, and Uva provinces, including Galle, Matara, and Kurunegala districts, reducing visibility on roads.

The general public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize potential risks, such as localized strong winds and lightning, during the thundershowers. Safety measures should include securing loose objects outdoors and avoiding open fields during lightning.

Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around the Island:

Rain Conditions: Showers or thundershowers are expected to occur at several locations in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee, including Colombo, Galle, Hambantota, and Batticaloa. These weather conditions are likely to intensify during the evening or night.

Winds: Winds will generally be South-easterly or variable, with speeds ranging from 20 to 30 km/h.

State of the Sea: The sea areas around the island are expected to be slight. However, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may be experienced during thundershowers.

Safety Advisory: Mariners and those planning to travel by sea are advised to exercise caution due to the potential for strong gusty winds and rough seas during thundershowers.
