
Renowned Writer and Screenwriter Vajira Kasthuri Dies in Tragic Accident

Kasthuri, widely recognized for his significant contributions to Sri Lankan literature and cinema, passed away after colliding with an electric and telephone pole while traveling from Pannipitiya towards Hokandara.
The accident occurred in the Moragahapallam area of Pannipitiya, where Kasthuri's motorcycle crashed into the pole. He was found trapped between the poles and sustained severe head injuries. Despite immediate efforts to transport him to Homagama Base Hospital, Kasthuri succumbed to his injuries on the way.
The tragic incident came just one day after Kasthuri's birthday, leaving his family, friends, and fans in deep sorrow. Kasthuri, a father of two, had been a prominent figure in Sri Lankan literature, with a legacy that includes about ten novels. His notable works include "Sangala Varahan," "Ahupevatha," "Polkichi Premaya," and "Panduru Bandina Gas," which have left an indelible mark on the literary landscape.
Kasthuri was also known for his impactful work in the Sri Lankan film industry, contributing as a screenwriter for several acclaimed films, including "Adaraneeya Kathawak," "Dedunu Akase," "Mandara," and "Sooriya Sulanga." His collaboration with fellow screenwriter Priyantha Colombage produced some of the most celebrated works in Sri Lankan cinema.
