A special flight carrying 20 Sri Lankan prisoners, who had been held in the Central Prison of Kuwait, landed at the Katunayake Airport this afternoon. The prisoners were brought back to Sri Lanka under the Kuwait-Sri Lanka prisoner exchange agreement, which allows for the transfer of prisoners between the two countries.
The prisoners, who had been arrested by Kuwaiti security forces on charges related to drug use, transportation, smuggling, and various other offenses, were convicted, sentenced, and incarcerated in Kuwait. They have now been handed over to Sri Lankan authorities to serve the remainder of their sentences in Sri Lanka.
The Kuwait-Sri Lanka prisoner exchange agreement, signed in 2007, facilitates the repatriation of Sri Lankan nationals who have completed their legal proceedings in Kuwait. This marks the second such transfer since the agreement was first utilized in 2024, when 32 Sri Lankan prisoners were brought back to the island.
Sri Lankan authorities are expected to follow the due process of law as they manage the repatriated prisoners in accordance with Sri Lanka's legal framework.
