A special gazette notification has been issued by the Minister of Health, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, setting a maximum retail price for essential medicines in Sri Lanka. This new regulation aims to control the cost of medicines and ensure they remain affordable for the public.

According to the notification, the Drug Regulatory Authority (DRA) has been granted the authority to revise the maximum retail price of medicines twice a year. In addition, the DRA has the legal power to alter these maximum prices at any time to protect the public's well-being, particularly in response to fluctuations in the value of the dollar.

The move is expected to provide relief to consumers by making critical healthcare medications more accessible while also stabilizing the pharmaceutical market. The government has emphasized its commitment to safeguarding public health through transparent and flexible pricing mechanisms.

The new pricing structure is set to take effect immediately, with the DRA overseeing its enforcement and periodic updates.
