The Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as Ampara and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
Thunderstorms, accompanied by severe lightning, are likely to occur in several areas, with temporary localized strong winds expected during these events.
In light of this weather hazard, the general public is urged to take the following precautions to minimize the risks associated with lightning:
- Seek shelter indoors: Avoid staying under trees or in open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and near open water bodies during thunderstorms.
- Refrain from using wired telephones or connected electric appliances during thunderstorm activity.
- Avoid open vehicles: Do not use bicycles, tractors, boats, or other open vehicles when thunderstorms are occurring.
- Be alert to fallen trees and power lines, which can pose additional dangers.
For emergency assistance, individuals are advised to contact local disaster management authorities.
The Department of Meteorology has emphasized the importance of staying safe and following these guidelines to reduce the risk of injury and damage during the ongoing severe weather conditions.
