Former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila was acquitted today by the Colombo High Court in a financial fraud case involving an Australian national's company. Along with Gammanpila, another suspect was also cleared of all charges related to the case.

The legal battle, which spanned nearly nine years, stemmed from accusations that Gammanpila had forged the signature of the Australian national in 2016 to facilitate the sale of shares from the company. Further allegations claimed that he misappropriated up to Rs 21 million in fraudulent share transactions that occurred between 1996 and 1997.

After a prolonged trial that attracted significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the individuals involved, the court today ruled in favor of the former MP, finding him not guilty of all charges. Gammanpila, who has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the lengthy legal proceedings, expressed relief following the verdict. The other accused suspect was also acquitted.

This ruling marks a significant legal victory for Gammanpila, bringing an end to nearly a decade of legal challenges.
