73rd death anniversary of Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister, D.S. Senanayake, was commemorated at Independence Square in Colombo.

The event, organized by the D.S. Senanayake Memorial Society, brought together a number of distinguished guests, including family members, former government officials, and citizens, to honor the leader who played a pivotal role in the country’s independence movement.

your imageFloral tributes were laid at the statue of D.S. Senanayake by his grandsons, former ministers Ruwan Wijewardene and Wasantha Senanayake. The Deputy Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council, A.D.S. Gunawardene, also paid respects by garlanding the statue.

The ceremony began with a solemn moment of reflection, followed by a rendition of the Mahamanya D.S. Senanayake Mathindu Guna Samaru song by students from D.S. Senanayake College.

Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya then addressed the gathering, delivering a speech that highlighted the contributions of D.S. Senanayake to the nation. This was followed by a sermon delivered by the Most Venerable Bandarawela Wimaladharma of the Kollupitiya Polwatta Sri Dharmakithyarama, who reflected on the enduring legacy of the first prime minister.

Retired senior public official Austin Fernando also spoke at the event, discussing the profound impact D.S. Senanayake had on the political and social landscape of Sri Lanka.

The ceremony was a poignant reminder of D.S. Senanayake's vision and leadership, marking a significant moment in the history of Sri Lanka's path to independence.
