Sri Lanka Launches First-Ever Sperm Bank at Castle Street Hospital

The new facility is aimed at providing hope for individuals and couples struggling with fertility challenges, offering them an opportunity to access donated sperm for fertility treatments like artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
A sperm bank is a medical facility designed to collect, store, and distribute sperm donations for use in fertility procedures. It plays a crucial role in helping people with male infertility, as well as single women or couples who may not have a male partner. This service is already widely utilized across the globe to assist in conception.
Dr. Ajith Kumara Danthanarayana, the Director of the Castle Street Hospital for Women, emphasized that the new sperm bank will operate under stringent privacy and confidentiality standards. He reassured both donors and recipients that their identities and medical information will be securely protected throughout the process.
In addition, donors will be required to undergo a comprehensive series of medical tests to ensure the safety and quality of the donated sperm. This initiative represents a positive step forward in Sri Lanka’s reproductive health landscape, addressing the growing need for fertility treatments in the country.
The hospital is also urging the public to consider donating sperm, helping to create a supportive community that advances reproductive health services in Sri Lanka. This move is seen as a major step toward expanding healthcare options and providing hope for many families facing infertility challenges.
