Showers and Thundershowers Expected in Several Areas

The Meteorological Department has issued a weather forecast for 22 March 2025, predicting showers and thundershowers at several locations across the island after 2:00 p.m. Showers are expected to affect Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, and Northern provinces, as well as Anuradhapura, Galle, and Matara districts.

Heavy showers, exceeding 75 mm in some areas, are anticipated in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as Galle and Matara districts.

Additionally, several spells of showers are expected in the Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts.

Misty conditions will prevail in the morning across some areas in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva provinces, including Galle and Matara districts.

The public is advised to take precautionary measures to minimize the impact of temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.

Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around the Island – Next 24 Hours

The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast for sea areas around the island for the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Additionally, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Winds will be predominantly Easterly or variable, with speeds ranging between 20 to 30 km/h. The state of the sea is expected to be slight to moderate, with temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas expected during thundershowers.

Mariners and sea-going travelers are advised to exercise caution due to the potential for sudden weather changes, especially during thundershowers.
