Police Media Spokesman, Manatunga, has confirmed that he will continue in his role until a suitable replacement is appointed, following his resignation submission on 10 March due to personal reasons.

Speaking to the media after the Police Heroes' Day celebrations on 21 March, Manatunga clarified that despite submitting his resignation letter to Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Priyantha Weerasuriya, the resignation was not accepted.

Manatunga, who took on the role of Police Media Spokesperson on 16 December 2024, following the resignation of DIG Nihal Thalduwa, had traveled overseas after submitting his resignation and returned to Sri Lanka on 19 March. While he was abroad, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fredrick Wootler was appointed as Acting Police Spokesperson.

"A police officer cannot simply resign from an assigned responsibility. However, I have requested a transfer for personal reasons. Until a new appointment is made, I will continue to serve in this role," Manatunga said.

He further assured that he would continue to fulfill his duties as the Police Media Spokesperson until the National Police Commission decides on his request and makes a new appointment.

Manatunga's tenure as Police Spokesperson has seen significant media interactions, and his ongoing role ensures stability in communications until a permanent replacement is found.
