New Device to Detect Wild Elephants Tested on Batticaloa Railway Line

The device aims to ensure the safety of both trains and elephants by allowing train drivers to detect wild elephants from a distance of 500 meters.
Professor Lilantha Samaranayake, a researcher from the University of Peradeniya and the brain behind the innovative technology, shared that the device has undergone several rounds of improvements. These enhancements aim to address weaknesses identified during the initial phases of testing.
The new device is expected to play a crucial role in preventing accidents involving elephants, particularly at night when visibility is limited. The testing phase is set to continue, with further refinements planned to make the technology even more effective in detecting elephants in various conditions.
This innovation marks a significant step in bridging human-wildlife conflict and ensuring the safety of both railway passengers and elephants.
