Environmental advocate and conservationist, Samantha Gunasekara, has officially taken over as the new chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA). With a deep commitment to environmental preservation, Gunasekara is set to lead MEPA in its ongoing efforts to protect and sustain Sri Lanka's rich marine ecosystem.
Mr. Gunasekara brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as the Deputy Director of Customs.
He is also the founder and former head of the Customs Biodiversity Unit, where he played a pivotal role in integrating biodiversity protection into customs operations. His extensive background in environmental conservation and policy implementation positions his to drive MEPA's mission forward in safeguarding the nation's marine resources.
Under his leadership, MEPA is expected to focus on enhancing marine conservation efforts, strengthening policies to combat pollution, and promoting sustainable use of marine resources, while addressing emerging environmental challenges in Sri Lanka's coastal regions.
