Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has been ordered to remain in further remand custody until April 3, 2025, by the Matara Magistrate's Court. Tennakoon, who was previously subject to an arrest warrant linked to a shooting incident in the Pelena area of Weligama in 2023, surrendered to the court on March 19.

The former IGP had been evading arrest for nearly 20 days prior to his court submission. He is facing charges related to the shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama last year, which sparked significant public concern.

The court has now set the remand period until April 3, when further legal proceedings are expected. Tennakoon’s surrender marks a significant development in the case, which continues to attract public attention due to his high-profile role in the Sri Lankan Police force.

Authorities are continuing their investigations into the incident, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
