The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory warning of severe lightning for multiple provinces and districts across the country.
Thundershowers, accompanied by severe lightning, are expected to occur in several areas, including Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-western, and Uva provinces, as well as Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, and Mannar districts.
The department also warns that temporary localized strong winds may accompany the thundershowers, posing a further threat to public safety. As a result, the general public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damages caused by the lightning activity.
In light of the advisory, the public is advised to:
- Seek shelter indoors and avoid standing under trees or in open areas, such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and near open water bodies during thunderstorms.
- Refrain from using wired telephones or connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
- Avoid open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors, and boats.
- Be cautious of fallen trees and power lines.
For emergency assistance, the public is encouraged to contact local disaster management authorities.
Stay safe and vigilant as severe weather conditions continue to affect several regions.
