The Court of Appeal today, March 17, dismissed without hearing the writ petition filed by Ex Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon. Tennakoon had sought an interim injunction to prevent the execution of an arrest order issued by the Matara Magistrate's Court in relation to the 2023 shooting incident in Weligama.
The bench of judges, led by Acting Chairman of the Appellate Division, Justice Mohamed Lafar Tahir, and Justice Sarath Dissanayake, ruled that the petition would not be heard. As a result, they instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take immediate action to arrest Ex IGP Tennakoon and present him in court.
This decision follows a consideration of the petition on March 12, and the ruling was delivered this morning, further escalating the legal proceedings surrounding the controversial shooting incident.
