A crucial discussion on the upcoming Broadcasting Symposium was held at the Government Information Department's auditorium in Sri Lanka.

The meeting was jointly organized by the Electronic Broadcasters' Association and the Ministry of Mass Media. It was attended by key stakeholders, including Minister of Health and Mass Media, Mr. Nalinda Jayatissa, along with representatives from the Electronic Broadcasters' Association.

During the meeting, Minister Jayatissa emphasized that the symposium will serve as a vital platform for media professionals and scholars to discuss the challenges, responsibilities, and future prospects of the broadcasting industry.

He further stated that the event aims to promote best practices in both ethical media art and entertainment while improving the quality of content across the sector.

The discussion focused on several key topics, including the future of broadcasting over the next five years, addressing current challenges, and navigating complex copyright issues. It was agreed that the symposium would take place in June 2025 and will be organized as a one-day workshop, consisting of four sessions centered around different themes.

Subcommittees have been formed to oversee various aspects of the event, including publicity, financial resources, and support services. Proposals were also discussed for enabling remote participation for those unable to attend in person, with the potential for financial support from the Telecommunications Regulatory Council to facilitate this.

In addition to the symposium, there are plans to organize a workshop exclusively for journalists in the media sector after the conference, aiming to further enhance their skills and knowledge.

The meeting saw the participation of several notable figures, including the Additional Secretary (Development, Planning, and Information) of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, N.A.K.L. Wijenayake, Director (Development) W.P. Sewwandi, Director (Media) K.G. Jayantha, and representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission. The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Electronic Broadcasters Association, Chathuranga Hapuarachchi, also contributed to the discussions.

Future activities related to the symposium will be planned under the guidance of Minister Jayatissa and the relevant stakeholders. The event is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Sri Lanka's broadcasting industry and media landscape.
