The Matara Magistrate's Court has issued an open warrant for the arrest of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon in connection with a fatal shooting incident that occurred near a hotel in Weligama, Matara, in 2023.

The arrest order was issued by Chief Magistrate Aruna Buddhadasa, following a request from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The shooting incident led to the death of one CID officer and left another injured. In response to the tragedy, the Matara Magistrate's Court had previously issued an order on February 27, 2023, for the arrest of eight police officers, including Tennakoon, who were believed to be involved in the incident.

The CID has informed the court that they have carried out searches at 10 locations in their efforts to apprehend Tennakoon. Additionally, intelligence officers have been deployed to 18 other locations to aid in the arrest.

Authorities are continuing their search for the former IGP, and the CID remains actively engaged in investigating the case further.
