As a result of the derailment, the night mail train traveling from Colombo Fort to Badulla was halted at Gampola Railway Station, while the night mail train from Badulla to Colombo Fort was stopped at Nawalapitiya Railway Station until this morning.

The Upcountry Railway line, which was temporarily halted following the derailment of the 1008 passenger train running from Badulla to Colombo Fort, has been restored to normal operations as of 8:30 AM today (March 10).

The incident occurred yesterday (March 9) around 6:00 PM when the engine of the train derailed in the Pallegama area of Nawalapitiya. The engine, after derailing, lurched forward approximately 270 feet and collided with a hill near the railway line, coming to a stop.

According to officials at the Nawalapitiya Railway Control Room, the derailment caused significant damage to the railway line. However, efforts to restore services were swiftly carried out, and normal traffic has now resumed on the Upcountry line.
