The Police Children and Women's Bureau has reported a concerning increase in underage pregnancies across the country. According to Deputy Inspector General Renuka Jayasundara, 213 incidents of underage pregnancies have been documented so far this year, reflecting a significant rise compared to previous years.

Mrs. Jayasundara revealed that romantic relationships among girls under the age of 16 are a key contributing factor to this alarming trend. She emphasized that many of these pregnancies result from sexual assaults within these relationships, further exacerbating the situation.

In addition to the impact of early romantic involvement, Jayasundara pointed to a lack of sexual education, inadequate protection, and a general shortage of knowledge about sexual health as key factors driving this rise. She stressed the importance of addressing these issues through proper awareness programs and stronger protective measures for vulnerable young girls.

Authorities are calling for greater attention to be given to sexual health education, access to contraception, and the prevention of sexual abuse in order to reduce the occurrence of underage pregnancies and ensure the well-being of young girls in the country.
