The Elephant Pass Salt Factory, a key player in Sri Lanka’s salt production industry, is set to be handed over to the public on March 26, 2025, following a comprehensive modernization initiative.

The factory, now equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and advanced facilities, is expected to significantly boost local salt production and contribute to the country’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in this essential commodity.

The announcement was made by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunnetti, who highlighted that the factory’s upgrade would play a crucial role in enhancing the local production capacity and reducing dependency on imports.

"The modernization of the Elephant Pass Salt Factory will not only support our self-sufficiency efforts but will also provide a major boost to the economy by generating local employment opportunities and improving the overall salt production process," Minister Handunnetti stated.

The factory, located in the Northern Province, has a rich history of salt production dating back to colonial times. With the introduction of modern machinery, the facility aims to meet growing demand and ensure high-quality production standards.

The handover of the factory marks an important milestone in Sri Lanka's efforts to enhance industrial capacity, support local businesses, and strengthen the economy. The event will be a step toward realizing the country’s vision of sustainable development and self-reliance.
