Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali has directed the court registrar to make arrangements for a virtual hearing of the Ganemulla Sanjeewa murder case today, citing security concerns surrounding the nine suspects currently in remand custody.
The magistrate's order follows concerns about the safety risks involved in transporting the suspects to court. The registrar has already notified prison officials to facilitate the necessary arrangements for the hearing to be conducted via Skype.
To date, 11 suspects have been identified in connection with the murder, with nine suspects in custody. One suspect, who allegedly entered the court disguised as a lawyer and shot Ganemulla Sanjeewa, is currently under detention for a 90-day interrogation by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD). The remaining suspects are accused of aiding and abetting the murder and are in remand custody.
Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of nine suspects arrested in connection with the shooting and killing of drug trafficker, Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne, also known as “Ganemulla Sanjeewa.” The suspects will remain in custody until March 21 as investigations continue into the high-profile murder.
This virtual hearing allowed the legal process to continue while ensuring the safety of all involved.
