The Railway Department has announced a series of measures to prevent collisions between trains and wild elephants during night operations. The new strategies, which include revised train schedules and reduced speed limits, will be implemented in high-risk areas starting March 7, 2025.

As part of the initiative, train schedules have been revised in regions known for frequent elephant sightings. The affected sections include the Batticaloa line from Palugaswewa to Hingurak Goda, and sections of the Trincomalee line, from Welikanda to Poonani and from Galoya Junction to Kantale.

These changes aim to reduce the risk of accidents involving elephants, particularly during the night when visibility is low.

Additionally, the Railway Department has planned to deploy an S-13 type power set for the "Meenagaya" intercity night mail train, which operates between Colombo Fort and Batticaloa. This upgraded train is designed to improve safety and reduce the likelihood of incidents with wildlife.

The new measures come as part of the department's ongoing commitment to enhancing passenger safety and protecting Sri Lanka’s wildlife.
