The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has announced that they will initiate an island-wide strike starting from March 5, if the government does not address the recent cuts to additional duty and holiday allowances for government medical officers.

According to GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa, the 2025 national budget has reduced these critical allowances, prompting the union to call for their restoration.

“The additional duty and holiday allowances for doctors must be reinstated. If this issue is not resolved by March 6, the GMOA will take more stringent actions starting from March 7,” Dr. Sugathadasa warned.

He further emphasized that if the situation remains unresolved by March 7, the government will face significant challenges in maintaining essential health services across the country.
