The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory urging the general public to take necessary precautions to minimize the risks associated with lightning activity. Severe thundershowers, accompanied by intense lightning, are expected to occur at several locations in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces, as well as in Monaragala district.

Safety Guidelines:

  • Seek shelter indoors whenever possible and avoid taking shelter under trees.
  • Stay away from open areas, such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and open water bodies, during thunderstorms.
  • Refrain from using wired telephones and electrically connected appliances during storms.
  • Avoid open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors, and boats, which may increase the risk of lightning strikes.
  • Stay vigilant for fallen trees and power lines that may pose dangers.

In addition to the lightning, temporary localized strong winds may accompany the thundershowers, further increasing the risk of damage.

For immediate assistance during these conditions, the public is advised to contact local disaster management authorities.

Please stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your property.
