The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for showers and thundershowers to occur at times in the Eastern, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as in the districts of Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, and Polonnaruwa. Several spells of showers are also expected in the Northern province and Anuradhapura district.
Heavy showers, with rainfall amounts exceeding 75 mm, are likely at certain locations in Uva province and the districts of Batticaloa, Ampara, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Hambantota, and Polonnaruwa.
Additionally, fairly strong winds of 30-40 km/h are expected in the North-central, Eastern, and North-western provinces, as well as in Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Stay updated with weather alerts and take safety measures, especially during the afternoon and night when thundershowers are expected to occur in several areas.
Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around the Island – 01 March 2025
The Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning for sea areas around the island for the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers are expected at several locations off the coast from Mullaittivu to Colombo, extending via Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Hambantota, and Galle. The likelihood of rain or thundershowers will increase in other sea areas during the afternoon or night.
Winds:
Winds will primarily be north-easterly, with speeds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h. However, wind speeds may temporarily increase up to 45-50 km/h in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, and Kankasanthurai, as well as from Galle to Hambantota via Matara.
State of the Sea:
The sea conditions will be fairly rough at times in the aforementioned areas, with moderate conditions in other sea areas around the island. Sea conditions may worsen temporarily during thundershowers, with gusty winds and very rough seas expected.
Advisory:
Mariners are advised to exercise caution while navigating the sea areas, especially in areas prone to thundershowers, and to be alert for sudden changes in weather conditions.
