Matara Magistrate's Court has issued an order for the arrest of eight former officers from the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), including former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on December 31, 2023, in front of the W15 Hotel, located in the Pelena area of Weligama, Matara.

The shooting, which shocked the local community, left several individuals injured and sparked widespread public concern.

According to sources, the former CCD officers have been named as suspects in the incident, which is believed to have been part of a larger criminal conspiracy. The arrest orders come after a detailed investigation and examination of evidence linking the former officers to the crime.

The shooting incident was originally reported as an act of violence between rival groups, but subsequent investigations have revealed that former members of the CCD may have been involved. The Matara Magistrate’s Court has now authorized the arrest of these individuals, marking a significant step in the investigation.

The former IGP, Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was at the helm of the police force during the time of the incident, faces serious charges. His involvement in the case has raised questions about the role of law enforcement in criminal activities, with public outcry growing over the matter.

As the investigation continues, the authorities have stated that further developments are expected in the coming days. The court’s decision to arrest these individuals is seen as a bold move to hold those in positions of power accountable for their actions.

The arrest orders have put the spotlight on the role of the police force in maintaining law and order, with many calling for further reforms to prevent such incidents in the future. The outcome of this case is likely to have far-reaching implications for the country’s criminal justice system.

The authorities have urged anyone with additional information about the shooting to come forward as the investigation unfolds.
