In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has directed the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to pay annual interest on security deposits collected from its consumers. The court ordered that the interest rate be set at 11.67%, in line with the rate paid by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The decision comes as part of a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by the Electricity and Renewable Energy Consumers’ Association, which sought fair treatment for electricity consumers, including domestic users, who had deposited security funds with the CEB.

The court’s ruling mandates that the CEB pay annual interest on all security deposits across all consumer categories, ensuring that those who have made such deposits are fairly compensated for the use of their funds.

This order is expected to significantly impact electricity consumers across the country, offering them financial relief as interest is paid on their security deposits going forward. The CEB has yet to release an official statement regarding the implementation of the Supreme Court's ruling.
