The Sri Lankan Government has confirmed that efforts to extradite former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Arjuna Mahendran, are ongoing, despite facing certain legal obstacles. Mahendran, who is alleged to be involved in the 2015 Treasury bond scams, has been a point of contention in Sri Lanka's legal and political circles.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa acknowledged the legal barriers that have delayed Mahendran's extradition process but emphasized that the Government is working closely with the relevant agencies to bring him back to Sri Lanka. “There is a legal barrier, but we are making every possible effort to bring him back,” Dr. Jayatissa said.

The Cabinet Spokesperson further stated that regardless of Mahendran's extradition status, legal actions related to the Treasury bond scams would continue uninterrupted. "Whether he is here or not, the legal actions will proceed," Dr. Jayatissa asserted, emphasizing that justice will be pursued.

Dr. Jayatissa also referenced statements made by former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who had publicly revealed that Mahendran left Sri Lanka for Singapore after informing him. “As a former Prime Minister, he has a responsibility to bring him back,” Jayatissa added, underscoring the ongoing responsibility of political leaders in addressing this issue.

The Government’s position comes as calls for Mahendran's return intensify, with many parties questioning the progress of the extradition process. However, Sri Lankan authorities remain committed to pursuing justice, whether or not Mahendran is physically present in the country.

The Treasury bond scams of 2015 remain one of the most significant financial scandals in Sri Lankan history, and the legal and political ramifications continue to unfold.
