The Department of Meteorology has issued a Warm Weather Advisory for tomorrow, February 24th, warning of increased heat index levels in several provinces and districts. The advisory states that the heat felt on the human body could reach the 'Caution level' in areas including the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as Galle and Matara districts.

The ‘Caution’ level indicates that prolonged exposure and physical activity may lead to fatigue, and continuing strenuous activity could result in heat cramps. As temperatures rise, the Department has urged the public to take necessary precautions.

People are advised to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in shaded areas, and limit outdoor exertion. It is also recommended to check on vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and sick, avoid leaving children unattended in vehicles, and wear lightweight, white, or light-coloured clothing to minimize the effects of the heat.

The Heat Index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature, representing the actual temperature felt by the body. This forecast does not reflect the maximum temperature but offers a more accurate representation of how the heat will feel. The advisory was issued based on global numerical weather prediction model data and covers the upcoming period.
