Government doctors have raised concerns regarding a budgetary proposal to reduce an allowance paid to them, citing it as an authoritarian decision.

The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA), in a statement issued by its secretary, Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa, expressed distress over the move to curtail the additional duty allowance.

The issue was discussed during a recent central committee meeting of the association, where they also deliberated on 10 key matters affecting the healthcare sector.

Despite the concerns over the allowance cut, the GMOA welcomed certain positive aspects of the budget, including a record Rs. 604 billion allocation for the health sector, marking the largest-ever funding for health in the country's history.

The GMOA has urged the government to reconsider the proposal, emphasizing the importance of fair compensation for doctors and healthcare workers who are on the frontlines of public health.
