Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya revealed today that authorities have identified 58 organized criminal gangs across Sri Lanka, involving around 1,400 individuals.

Speaking at a special press conference at the Government Information Department, the Acting IGP highlighted the alarming rise in violent incidents, with 17 shooting incidents and 5 hacking deaths recorded within this year alone.

Acting IGP Weerasuriya confirmed that investigations into all 17 shooting incidents have been completed. However, the disturbing trend extends beyond just the criminals, with certain members of the police force and the Tri-Forces found to be involved, either directly or indirectly, in some of these criminal activities. As a result, 11 personnel have been arrested for their involvement in these incidents.

"We are committed to bringing the full force of the law to bear on these gangs and those complicit within our own ranks," said the Acting IGP. He assured the public that the police force is actively working to dismantle these criminal operations and restore law and order across the country.

The statement comes as part of ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and ensure accountability among law enforcement personnel involved in criminal acts. Further investigations are underway as authorities continue to address the rising concerns of violence across the nation.
