The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather alert for the next few days, forecasting enhanced rainfall over several regions of particularly in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces, as well as the Hambantota district, starting from February 24th.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at a few places in the Galle, Matara, Kaluthara, and Rathnapura districts in the evening or night. Meanwhile, the majority of the island will experience mainly dry weather conditions throughout the day.

In addition, misty conditions are likely in the morning in certain areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and North-central provinces, along with the Kurunegala district.

The general public is advised to take necessary precautions due to the possibility of temporary localized strong winds and lightning during the thundershowers. It is recommended to stay indoors and avoid open fields during such weather conditions to minimize the risk of accidents or damage.

Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around the Island - 22 February 2025

Weather Conditions: Fair weather will prevail across the sea areas surrounding the island, with minimal chances of rainfall.

Winds: Winds will be blowing from the north-eastern direction, with speeds ranging between 20-30 km/h. However, wind speeds may increase up to 40 km/h at times in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Mannar via Puttalam.

State of the Sea: The sea areas off the coasts from Negombo to Mannar via Puttalam are expected to be fairly rough at times. In contrast, other sea areas around the island will remain relatively calm and slight.

Mariners and sea travelers are advised to exercise caution, especially in the more turbulent areas.
