In a heartbreaking incident, a train traveling from Batticaloa to Colombo collided with a herd of elephants at Gal Oya, resulting in the tragic deaths of five elephants. Sri Lanka Railways confirmed the accident, stating that the impact of the collision caused the train to derail, further obstructing services on the line.

The herd of elephants, which had reportedly been crossing the tracks, was struck by the oncoming train at approximately 6:30 AM. The collision left five elephants dead and caused significant damage to the train's structure, disrupting train services along the Batticaloa-Colombo route.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the tragic collision. Rail services along the affected line have been temporarily suspended, with delays expected to continue until the tracks are cleared and the train is safely removed.

Sri Lanka Railways expressed condolences for the loss of the elephants and assured the public that efforts to resume normal operations are underway. In addition, wildlife experts are working with local authorities to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent future incidents involving wildlife on railway tracks.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing challenges of protecting wildlife in areas where railway lines intersect with natural habitats. Efforts to raise awareness about wildlife corridors and prevent such accidents are now more urgent than ever.
