The Department of Meteorology has issued a Heat Index Advisory for tomorrow, February 18, affecting the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, and Southern provinces, as well as the Rathnapura district. The advisory warns that the heat index, which reflects the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to rise to the 'Caution Level' in some areas of these regions.

At the 'Caution' level, prolonged exposure to the heat could lead to fatigue, and continuing physical activity may result in heat cramps. As such, the public is strongly advised to stay hydrated, take regular breaks in shaded areas, and limit strenuous outdoor activities.
Additionally, people are encouraged to check on the elderly and those with health conditions, avoid leaving children unattended in vehicles, and wear lightweight, white or light-colored clothing to stay cool.
The Heat Index is calculated based on both relative humidity and maximum temperature, providing a more accurate depiction of what the human body actually experiences. It differs from the traditional temperature forecast as it accounts for how humidity affects perceived heat.
Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety in the hot conditions forecasted for tomorrow.
