Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage celebrates 50th anniversary

Minister Dhammika Patabendi announced a new initiative aimed at protecting the elephants at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The announcement was made during the 50th anniversary celebration of the orphanage, which was attended by Deputy Minister Anton Jayakody.
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which was established in 1975 under the leadership of Mr. P.B.G. Kalugalle, is located on a 25-acre site and currently houses 68 elephants. To mark the milestone, several events were held, including the awarding of prizes and certificates to winners of painting, drawing, video, and photography competitions.
In addition, a fruit tree planting program was launched at the orphanage, contributing to its ongoing conservation efforts. The new protection program aims to further enhance the well-being of the elephants and ensure their preservation for future generations.
