In a recent statement, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, dismissed rumors claiming that construction work on the Ruwanpura Expressway has been abandoned.

He clarified that while work on the expressway has been temporarily suspended, the decision is in line with the government's current development priorities.

The Ruwanpura Expressway, designed to connect Kahathuduwa to Ratnapura through Horana and Ingiriya, remains a key infrastructure project. However, due to the government's focus on other critical development initiatives, the project has been placed on hold for the time being.

As part of its strategic development plan, the government has shifted focus to the Central Expressway project, with work planned to begin on the Kurunegala-Galagedara section. The construction of the Central Expressway is to be carried out in two segments: the Pothuhera-Rambukkana section and the Rambukkana-Galagedara section. The Pothuhera-Rambukkana stretch is expected to be completed by next year, while the Rambukkana-Galagedara section is slated for completion within three years.

Additionally, the Kadawatha-Mirigama section, which had been delayed for an extended period, is set to resume with the assistance of Chinese expertise, further reinforcing the government's commitment to enhancing national infrastructure.
