A significant meeting took place yesterday at the Opposition Leader's Office in Colombo between the Swiss Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Dr. Siri Walt, and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. The discussion centered around securing Switzerland's support for renewable energy initiatives in Sri Lanka.
During the meeting, Premadasa highlighted the importance of Switzerland’s pioneering renewable energy legislation passed in 2023, which transitioned the country from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources.
He commended Switzerland’s approach as a historic step in combating climate change and urged the Swiss government to offer maximum possible assistance to Sri Lanka for similar projects, particularly in the renewable energy sector.
In light of Sri Lanka's recent power outage, Premadasa emphasized the pressing need for long-term solutions to the nation's energy crisis. He explained that the blackout was caused by system imbalances, where discrepancies between electricity consumption and generation led to an overload. Premadasa reiterated the necessity for the government to prioritize renewable energy investments, particularly in critical infrastructure such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Power Plants (PSPP), which have been largely overlooked by the administration.
The Opposition Leader stressed that Sri Lanka must take immediate actions across short, medium, and long-term plans to stabilize its power supply and prevent future power outages. He sought the Swiss Ambassador's assistance in facilitating these crucial energy reforms.
The meeting was also attended by Former Member of Parliament Eran Wickramaratne, representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
The discussion underscored the urgent need for international cooperation in addressing Sri Lanka's energy challenges and ensuring a sustainable, uninterrupted power supply for the nation.
