The Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, has strongly criticized the government's response to the ongoing power crisis in Sri Lanka, accusing officials of mismanagement and deflecting responsibility.

In a post on 'X' (formerly Twitter), Premadasa pointed to the fragility of the national grid as the core issue behind the frequent power outages, suggesting that it cannot accommodate growing solar energy capacity and periods of low demand.

Premadasa slammed government officials for shifting blame, first attributing the power failures to monkeys and later to previous administrations. "First, they blamed the monkeys. Then, they blamed past governments. But the real issue? A fragile grid that can’t handle solar growth & low-demand periods," Premadasa wrote.

He emphasized that the government's failure to address the root causes of the power crisis is contributing to ongoing energy shortages and public frustration.

The Opposition Leader called for serious reforms in the energy sector, stressing that misinformation and finger-pointing would not resolve the problem. “Misinformation won’t fix power outages—serious reforms will especially in the power sector.

A real system change starts with transparency,” he added, urging the government to take responsibility and implement reforms that will lead to a more sustainable and reliable energy infrastructure.

Premadasa's comments come amidst growing public discontent over the recurring power cuts, with many questioning the government's ability to provide consistent and reliable electricity. As the crisis continues, calls for greater accountability and structural changes in the energy sector are expected to intensify.
