The Ministry of Urban Development, Construction, and Housing has announced plans to reduce water tariffs before the end of this month. Minister Anura Karunathilaka stated that the tariff reduction aims to benefit households that consume smaller quantities of water.
In addition to the water tariff changes, proposals for a 20% reduction in electricity bills have also been put forward. The Minister revealed that he has instructed a committee from the National Water Supply and Drainage Board to review all these proposals and provide a detailed report.
Minister Karunathilaka emphasized that while determining water tariffs, electricity costs contribute around 40% to the overall pricing structure. With this in mind, a new pricing model will be announced shortly to reflect these adjustments.
The reduction in tariffs is expected to offer relief to consumers, particularly those with lower water usage, further supporting the government's efforts to alleviate the cost of living.
